ADA-Compliant Artificial Turf Installation EXPERTS
ADA compliance for artificial turf is not simply about selecting the right product. It requires a fully integrated installation approach that ensures the finished surface is stable, firm, and slip resistant, as required under ADA floor and ground surface standards.
Synthetic turf is classified as a ground surface under ADA guidelines. However, the law does not assign numeric values to define “stable” or “firm.” Instead, compliance is determined through recognized industry testing and proper installation methods.

Product Alone Is Not ADA Compliance
Purchasing an ADA-tested turf product does not automatically make a project compliant.
True compliance requires:
• Proper sub-base preparation
• Accessible pathways to the turf surface
• Correct transitions to surrounding materials
• Appropriate grading and edge treatment
For example, installing accessible turf on a playground without wheelchair-accessible access routes results in a non-compliant project. ADA compliance must be evaluated as a complete system.
Transition Strips & Edge Conditions
Transitions between turf and adjacent surfaces—such as concrete or pavers—must be carefully detailed.
Level changes require:
• No treatment if 1/4 inch or less
• Beveled treatment (maximum 1:2 slope) if between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch
• Flush, ramped transitions if greater than 1/2 inch
Improper transitions are one of the most common causes of ADA inspection failure.
